Zines! Some of my favorite forms of self-published art, zines are a window into an artist’s mind. This week I’m looking at a vibrant, trippy, and humorous zine- NYC RATS.

Almost immediately, vibrant pink and green grab your attention and work together to stand out. Like the graphics on this first page, the image looks almost holographic and uniquely layered with the background. The font choices also play a big role in grabbing the viewer’s attention, with the title having a playful graffiti vibe and the link-like font toward the bottom of the title page baiting you to open it.

These black-and-white pages stood out to me because they aren’t what you would expect in this zine compared to the other pages and the cover. But I appreciate the detail with only black ink; no color is needed. The style stays trippy and graffiti-inspired, which fits with the rest of the pages and theme.
